Jason Calacanis: "Newspapers deserve to die. Good riddance."
OMMA, oh my! A YouTube clip of Jason Calacanis "incendiary" keynote address "Advertising, Riots, Twitter, Facebook and the Depression" at the OMMA Hollywood 2009 conference was posted Thursday in which the well-known founder of human-powered search site Mahalo.com boldly declares: "Newspapers deserve to die. Good riddance."
How's that for a 2.0-inspired death knell in the newspaper industry's coffin?
Tune in around the 07:00 mark, where Calacanis gets the digital media knives out:
"Now is the time for new media to give the knockout blow to traditional media. Now is the time we can take them out. They're suffering they're fat and they're slow. They like big offices, they like inefficiency, and they like their monopolies."
Then, calling out big bad Old Media as a virtual journalistic Titanic bound straight for the icebergs, Calacanis triumphantly celebrates the demise of newspapers "that did nothing" and "deserve to die" because "new things can take their place that are better!"
New media is better than newspapers, you say? Thems is fightin' words!
