What could make for a perfect Valentine's Day?  How about a Friday the 13th movie date with Jason Voorhees to kick off the weekend?  In 2009 the scariest date on the calendar, Friday the 13th, is immediately followed by the most romantic, Valentine's Day, and what better way to celebrate this unusual event than with a cinematic bloodbath?

Jason Voorhees, the ultimate movieland slasher, returns on Friday the 13th of February in a remake of the classic horror film that critics actually seem to like. Starring Jared Padalecki of the TV series Supernatural, the new Friday the 13th really sounds like an improved version.

“It’s a throwback to the originals,” Righetti said. “You still play to that audience that is built-in, that grew up watching Friday the 13th and are huge fans of it, but also the new generation who maybe hasn’t seen the old 1980 film.”

In this version, the camp is in ruins when Clay (Jared Padalecki) goes searching for his sister (Righetti) at infamous Crystal Lake although the authorities and locals advise him to stay away. Clay meets a group of college kids partying at a lake house.

It’s the typical formula for a slasher movie and guessing who dies in what order. What’s not to love?

“You know going in it’s Friday the 13th and if there are 13 characters in the beginning, there aren’t going to be 13 at the end. So you know people are going to die.” Padalecki said. “But I like that when it gets down to business you don’t know who it’s going to be. It sort of keeps you guessing, and that’s the idea.”

The remade Friday the 13th starring Jared Padalecki was put together by Michael Bay, who has successfully updated other horror genre masterpieces like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror.  Like the newest Friday the 13th these modern remakes of vintage horror films were also better than their originals.

Padalecki's Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles starred in another slasher classic remake of the movie My Bloody Valentine, in 3-D no less, but it was not nearly as well received by critics.  Despite My Bloody Valentine's very Valentiney title, the remade Friday the 13th looks to be the clear critics choice in the Supernatural battle of the slasher film remakes.

Not only does this one wrest some fresh thrills from a tired formula, it does so largely without resorting to the more sadistic style prevalent in contemporary horror. In other words, the movie emphasizes the chasing and the killing, not the suffering, which makes its brand of mayhem easier to take than the degradations that dominate the Saw cycle.

But then, Jason has always been a traditionalist at heart. He also remains impossible to kill, which is bad news both for Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki), the brother of a missing young woman who was one of the unlucky pot-hunters, and for a fresh batch of ill-fated hotties partying at a cottage near Crystal Lake.

Scenes of binge drinking and topless wakeboarding provide respites from the requisite series of gory murders. Besides deploying the genre's usual devices (e.g., cellphones with no reception, faulty flashlights, swift punishment for the horny), the movie also makes good on the old stage adage that if a wood chipper is introduced in the first act, it will be used in the third.

True to the horror film formula Jason Voorhees can not be killed as he takes out plenty of morally challenged millenials and half naked girls.  Michael Phelps take note, on Friday the 13th pot smoking parties don't end in shame with a head held down, they end in death with a head in Jason's hand.

Hollywood has given us all an unexpected Valentine's Day gift in this latest chapter of the Friday the 13th franchise - a perfect date movie.  You will want to cuddle up to your true love while watching this horror flick, and isn't that what Valentine's Day is all about?

Yeah I actually got to see a sneak screening on Monday and I have to say they did a really good job with this remake. Im a huge Friday the 13th fan from when I was a little kid. Part 3 being my favorite, this movie really is pretty good.  A fun exciting movie with some good back story and lots of our favorite hockey masked maniac.

I loved that movie! Me and my brother Jason went to see it the first day it came out. He said that the movie was more about him killing but it didnt tell about the history of "Camp Crystal Lake" than it should have but I for one disagreed.
