Jay Leno versus the World

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 was the day when late night television united against one common enemy: Jay Leno.

In Twilight, the popular film and book series, fans are divided into two teams: Team Edward and Team Jacob. The same could be said for the entertainment industry, except that there's no division. With the exception of Jerry Seinfeld, everyone is on Team Conan. And they showed it tonight.

On Conan, he did a sketch where he used the Deal or No Deal game to decide his future. Howie Mandel, the host of that game show, was there to participate in the sketch and show his support. Mandel has been friends with Leno for 30 years! Then, Conan's first guest was legendary news figure, Tom Brokaw who was there to promote a new special but instead talked about how much he loved Conan and considered him a family member. On Letterman, the Leno bashing was in round two with a video sketch where Letterman pondered what NBC's 10pm slot will look like once Leno is gone. The answer was a new show titled, Law & Order: Leno Victims Unit with Ice-T as Carson Daly. However, the biggest diss came from an un-expected source: Jimmy Kimmel. On his show tonight (or today since it airs at midnight), he did his ENTIRE show dressed as Jay Leno. He even mocked his monologue style and spoofed the Headlines segment.

And these three are just the icing on the cake. There was so much mocking of Leno and NBC that tomorrow most of us will devout hours into catching up online. Even Saturday Night Live is poking fun at them through their ads for this weekend's episode.

One has to wonder what Leno and NBC have to be thinking about this.

In Hollywood the saying goes something like this "There's no publicity like free publicity" and with all the scat getting tossed about recently I'm sure everyone's late night show is getting a ratings boost and should thank Jay and everyone on his show for this.

Everyone is getting a ratings bump except for Jay Leno.
