Jerry Springer the Opera: Klan Entrance

In celebration of trash talk television and all things low-brow and profane, Jerry Springer: The Opera (yes it's all too true), will conclude its brief, two night run in New York City tonight.

The award-winning British import is currently playing a two-night concert stint, starring Harvey Keitel...as the titular trashy talk-show host, at NYC’s Carnegie Hall — presumably in lieu of a previously announced then mysteriously scuttled Broadway run.
The opera had a substantial and succesful run in London from 2003-2005, but it has only recently made its way across the pond to be taken in by American audiences. Controversy has surrounded the production for its profanity and 'blasphemous' content.  Street protests were even organized against the British television screening of a previous production. However, this is more than a simple piece of musical theatre, it is a fully -realized opera; and one that ironically juxtaposes its form and content.
The conceit of Jerry Springer is that it is, in fact, a full-fledged opera, packed with arias and fugues, dramatic duets and trios, gorgeous orchestrations, and lush, sophisticated melodies by Richard Thomas. The lyrics, however, by Thomas and Stewart Lee, tend toward the lowbrow (“My mum used to be my dad... snip, snip”). Imagine a soft, confessional ballad that begins with the line “A weird thing happened last night when I went to take a leak.” (Maybe now you get the picture.) By Act 2, the shtick grows a bit tiresome; when Jerry is broadcasting Springer from Hell (get ready for a Satan versus Jesus smackdown!) the show really goes off the rails. But you have to give props to whoever thought to give Eve a serpent tattoo and a mullet.
Needless to say, for every pop culture critic who 'gives props' to the production's over-the-top antics, there will be equally loud voices of dissent, in this case, courtesy of the Catholic League:

Carnegie Hall will host the anti-Christian and blasphemous show "Jerry Springer-The Opera" on January 29, to the protests of the Catholic League and its president, Bill Donohue.

"Never before in its illustrious history has Carnegie Hall been home to Christian bashing, but that is all about to change on January 29 and 30," said Donohue. "Incredibly, it is allowing a patently obscene and viciously anti-Christian musical to be performed on its stage. Thus has it got into bed with the bigots, making a mockery of art in the process. This isn't art-it's license."

The show is filled with obscenity, and the Catholic League provides a synopsis of the show's DVD which includes Jesus admitting he's gay, sexual assault between biblical characters and portrays Satan as a friendly character frustrated with the ridiculous behavior of Jesus, Adam and Eve in streams of obscene language.
What do you think? Is this a worthy production for Carnegie Hall to have staged?

Springer himself had attended the show when it ran at the National Theatre, giving it the thumbs-up.

Hi Jarrett,

This is a great story, however the phrases that come to mind:

* Oh for the love of G-d!

* You've got to be kidding me!

* Just when you think you've seen it all!

.....  and last but not least .....

Only in America!

There are some things I did not expect to see on vacation in London during 2003.

Ah, happy day. Not sure what Christian Voice thought of us - actually, strike that, I'm completely sure what they thought of us once they sussed we weren't entirely what we seemed.

I took this picture right before entering Carnegie Hall opening night of Jerry Springer... I think what shocked me the most was seeing children under the age of 5 "protesting" along with their parents.

I've just added a photo of Stephen Green, leader of the group Christian Voice, who have picketed performances of Jerry Springer: The Opera since its launch. Not pictured is the nearby counter demonstration, with the slogan 'Religion is screwing the world'.

Jerry Springer, The Opera, was on at The Theatre Royal, Newcastle. I went with some friends to take photographs, because we heard that a Christian group was lobbying the theatre. I found the protestors to be very unfriendly and suspicious of us. One of them got angry when I pointed out that I had a right to take photos, just as he had a right to protest.
