Jimmy's Cafe by laniwurm

The boarded up building in the centre used to be Jimmy's Cafe. It was the featured in a play produced by Theatre in the Raw in 2000 entitled "The Street," an autobiographical story of drug addiction in Vancouver's East End in the 1950s, written by W . Ruth Kozak.

Well I'll be! A nice little blurb referring to my play The Street that was successfully produced and ran 3 wks back in 2000.  Been trying and hoping for a rerun since then, but no dice.

Too bad, as it's still pretty timely even though it was set in the '50's Strathcona.

My info about Jimmy's came from Bob Sarti's review of your play in the Sun. I've known Jay almost since Theatre in the Raw began, but never made it out to see The Street. I wished I had while researching this though. Given all the changes likely to happen around here in the next while, another run would indeed be timely.

Actually, that boarded up space was Fong's meat market. (I know Betty who was the owner's daughter. She went to school with me).  Jimmys was actually farther down on the other side of Ted Harris's paint store.

D'oh! I think Bob Sarti just wrote that it was beside the Astoria, and when i walked by, I assumed this must be the place. Was Jimmy's on the corner of Princess and Hastings by any chance, or is that too far?

I'd like to get together and chat about those days sometime. If you're interested and available to meet for a coffee, email me at laniwurm[at]gmail.com.
