John Digweed Makes it to Vancouver!
If you have never heard of John Digweed, well, it wouldn' t surprise me. It's not like Global, CHUM, MTV Canada, or MTV USA would go out of their way to give him his own prime time mainstream media show, and that's a fact. However, in Britain, and most of the music more influenced by "British popular artistic hegemony," Digweed is almost a G-d. He has his own primetime show on London's syndicated and prestigeous Kiss FM, and carries a following that undoubtedly earns him an Earl's ransom.
He played last night at Celebrities, Van's only hot spot for high profile world underground players, to a full'eee' loaded 'house,' complete with a multicultural environment one could only find in a Utopia. Last time I saw Digweed was almost a decade ago, in Montreal, and back then I was a little too loaded to see it in the eyes that I saw it last night; what a difference 10 years makes...
I hate being a critic, especially of the arts, because quite frankly I find that sort of thing irritating, likewise I did make a few observations:
Boy, has Digweed done a good job inspiring the world to create progressive house music once only heard in London, New York, Chicago, maybe Montreal (correct me please).
When I was 17 it was him on the covers of DJ and Mixmag that I used to put next to my turntables and look for inspiration, along with the advice of the renegades at Odyssey Records on Seymour (remember those days, I used to be shit scared to go in there!). It was thanks to guys like him (Digweed) that we have such a thriving house culture in Vancouver and the rest of the West Coast today; and believe you me, we have the DJ's and performers to prove it.
I haven't heard that Tenaglia's coming to town yet, so I guess Van is still a fly by, but thanks John for great show- that a local boy/ girl in Van could easily have replicated thanks to your years of hard work and inspiration.
I leave you with a shitty camera phone video of when he entered the mixing booth.
LL.

Well done, Lee. (I know of Digweed as part of Sasha and ___, but have never seen either or both live)
