John Hughes Dead: Ferris Bueller Director Dies at 59
Film director John Hughes has died of a heart attack, according to TMZ. The 59-year-old filmmaker suffered a heart attack while taking a walk in New York.
John Hughes was one of the most successful filmmakers of the 1980s. Hughes directed hugely successful teen comedies such as The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. His 80s teen films spawned a host of imitators and became cable TV staples that are still broadcast regularly. Also, these are some of the most quotable films around (John Hughes movie quotes).
John Hughes later directed films such as Planes, Train, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and The Great Outdoors. His last big hit was 1990's Home Alone.
In later years, Hughes kept a relatively low profile. His last film credit was for writing the story for the 2008 comedy Drillbit Taylor. The film was based on a movie treatment that Hughes wrote years before.
Hughes' films affected an entire generation of fillmmakers and TV producers. Directors such as Kevin Smith and Judd Apatow have cited him as a major influence.

John Hughes made great contributions to pop cinema, and made emo cool at the movies.
