John Hughes Funeral: Director Buried at Lake Forest Cemetery

John Hughes' funeral took place yesteday at the Wenban Funeral Home in Chicago. John Hughes died five days ago of a heart attack in New York, and was laid to rest at Lake Forest Cemetery following a low-key funeral attended by family and close friends, such as Matthew Broderick and Ben Stein.

A local television crew was encamped near the Wenban Funeral Home, but the event was paparazzi-free.

Mourners arrived for the noon funeral, their cars quickly filling the small parking lot (a van shuttled the rest from a nearby area). They ranged from infant to elderly, and aside from the rare familiar face, this was a crowd whom Hughes, not the world, knew -- as befitting an incredibly successful filmmaker who lived an increasingly low-profile life outside Chicago rather than in the Hollywood spotlight.

The people who cared came to pay respect, which would have pleased Mr. Hughes far more than the glitz and sham mourning.
