Jonathan Frid: Dark Shadows Star Dead at 87
Jonathan Frid, who played Barnabas Collins in the original Dark Shadows deries, has died at age 87. Jonathan Frid passed away on April 14, 2012 in Hamilton, Ontario following complications due to pneumonia.
Jonathan Frid, who studied at RADA and the yale School of Drama, joined the cast of Dark Shadows as Barnabas Collins in 1967 in what was originally a guest role. Instead, Barnabas Collins became the face of Dark Shadows, and its subsequent remakes.
Jonathan Frid made only two film appearances: in Oliver Stone's Seizure, and in a guest role in the film version of Dark Shadows, which hits theaters in May 2012. Frid was planning on attending the premiere.
According to Dark Shadows costar Kathryn Leigh Scott, Jonathan Frid didn't enjoy his experience in TV and film, and spent the rest of his career performing on stage in his native Canada.
Johnny Depp, who plays Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton's 2012 version, told People Magazine, "Jonathan Frid was the reason I used to run home from school to watch Dark Shadows."
