Pop superhero Justin Timberlake is producing a new reality show, on which contestants (or victims) find themselves taking orders via mysterious mobile phones found in the street. The show is a remake of a Dutch program- Netherlands knows a thing or two about reality programming, having invented Big Brother. Their version is... well, let's just say it airs after 10pm.

Contestants who answer the phones will have five seconds to decide if they want to play along for a cash prize, and a guide on the other end of the line then gives contestants a mission to complete before time runs out.

As they race through the city on their adventure, a helicopter tracks their every move. MTV described the show as a wild and cinematic ride reminiscent of such films as "The Bourne Identity" and "The Game."

"Genre-busting and reinvention is at the core of what we do, and 'The Phone' does just that," Tony Disanto, MTV executive vice president of programming and series development, said in a statement.

"Each week will be an action-packed mini-movie," he said.

The show, which will be produced by reality specialist FremantleMedia North America, will begin airing in the United States this coming fall, though no specific launch date was disclosed. Timberlake will act as an executive producer.

Each episode will begin with two hidden cell phones ringing at opposite ends of a major city. Contestants who answer the phones will get to go on a timed mission for a cash prize. While they're racing through the city, a helicopter will track their every move. Kind of like that scene in the Bourne Ultimatum where Matt Damon's trying to get that journalist dude to follow his instructions—but sexy. Also nobody's going to get their heads blown off.
I can't help it, but my first though upon reading about this is, "Wow, it would be really easy to prank people once the show airs... just leave a pay-as-you-go handset and get a friend to hang around with a miniDV camera. Ring the handset when someone walks by, and eventually you'll get someone to pick it up and answer it. Then just get them to do the weirdest things you can think of. Most people won't necessarily think of the unreal elements of reality television, such as lighting, editing and liability waivers, so you could have some kooky fun with would-be reality celebs.

... Or am I just being mean?
