Jumping women want gender-equal Olympics
It's kind of weird that women ski jumping at the Olympics is even an issue. Aren't we in the noughts, as in not-1955?
Canada could become the first country to hold fully gender-equal Winter Olympic Games if it can convince the International Olympic Committee to change its mind and allow women ski jumpers to participate in 2010, the head of the U.S. women's ski jumping team said Friday.Deedee Corradini of Women's Ski Jumping USA used the backdrop of the Canadian Junior Ski Jumping Championships at the newly-finished ski jumps in Whistler Olympic Park to ask the Vancouver 2010 organizing committee to pressure the IOC to open the Games to women jumpers.
"We feel the women jumpers world wide are ready for this," she said in a telephone interview before leaving Salt Lake to hold a press conference at Vanoc's new jumps. "Vancouver 2010 has an opportunity to be the first Olympic Winter Games to have total gender equity."

Rob Peters, thanks! This does seem like a no-brainer. Funny how these things still exist just below surface. Good stuff.

The ski jumping track at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York. I witnessed a 13 yr old girl record a 94m jump in a New Year's ski jump competition on Dec 29th. It was breathtaking!

On Dec 27, they were practicing for the New Year's ski jump competition at Lake Placid, held two days later. It was amazing to watch. Both men and women were jumping, and what surprised me was not that there were women, but that they were so young.

As a former high school ski jumper from New Hampshire, having jumped with
many girls, some better then me, I see no reason why they should not
perticipate in the Olympics, unfortunatly the IOC currently seems to think
otherwise. This same request was denied a few years ago but hopefully the IOC can be convinced to allow woman to compete.

These women athletes are fearless. They possess the power, style and skill needed in this challenging sport. It is hard to believe that the International Olympic Committee does not allow them to compete in ski jumping in the Olympics. I hope they will rectify that so they can compete in the winter 2010 games. It is where they belong.

Ski jump in Planica, Slovenia. I believe the record for this jump is 239m from 2005 by Bjoern Einar Romoeren (not sure if anyone went further since).

Visiting Innsbruck ,Austria, was a thrill imaging what the Winter Olympics were like. It takes a (very) brave soul to jump and land safely!
