Kanye West Is Back: Spike Jonze Video 'We Were Once A Fairytale'
Kanye West is breaking his month-long silence that followed the incident at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when he interrupted singer Taylor Swift while she was getting her award for best female music video. West's rude interruption caused quite an uproar among his fellow celebrities. Although West apologized to Swift after the incident, he got quite a bit of ridicule in the online circles. The buzz surrounding West’s MTV awards mishap grew so big it almost made the news of Patrick Swayze’s death go barely noticed.
Now, West is re-emerging in the new 11-minute video (WARNING: the video contains disturbing images) shot by director Spike Jonze. Of course, Spike Jonze is a famous movie director, whose latest success is the screen version of the children's epic Where The Wild Things Are that dominated the Box Office over the weekend.
The video is titled We Were Once A Fairytale and involves West acting drunk and swearing on camera, while his own music plays in the background. By the end of the film, Kanye starts throwing up like crazy, and finally encounters a demon-like creature that lives within him after stabbing himself. His inner demon than dies to the sounds of "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven.
The video was made before the MTV awards incident. Sources dating back to June 25, 2009, are talking about it. They say the collaboration between Jonze and West started way back in March. However, the video has been released just now, which makes for some interesting timing. It is not clear who uploaded that video on YouTube either. It is known that the video did appear on West's website over the weekend, but was removed on Monday. So far, the responses on YouTube are mixed: some say Kanye is trying to come back, others are saying this is "way too weird." Most say it is a "thumbs up" for Jonze's directing.
Interestingly, the search term "RIP Kanye West" has been the top trend on Twitter lately. Many believe Jonze's video showing Kanye stabbing himself might have caused people to think West is dead.
Do you think this is yet another stunt by Kanye, or is it an attempt to make a statement? Is Kanye trying to say he was starting to walk the wrong path way back when..? Is it an elaborate metaphor for Kanye's rebirth as an artist, and an attempt to take away some of the negative publicity? What is your take?

I'm happy for you, Kanye, and I'm gonna let you finish, but A-Ha had the best video of all time. Of all time.

This is one of the weirdest short films that I have ever seen. The first 7 minutes was a waste of my time, but towards the end, when that thing a ma jig comes out of his stomach, that's some Stanley Kubrick shit right there.

This is a great story. I think Kanye West has received too much publicity. Kanye West also was cruel to Taylor Swift. It would not be a bad idea if people did not give Mr. West publicity or buy his films, CD's, and so on.
