Katy Perry's Adam Lambert Cape

I'm sure millions noticed that Katy Perry opened her American Idol performance by displaying an Adam Lambert emblazoned cape. While it surely is a sign that she, and at least one of the judges, are openly supportive of Lambert in his quest to become the next Idol, the effect of the endorsement may be a more complicated affair.

Perry's wardrobe choice serves to highlight a vein of increasing doubt about the competition's authenticity that has remained as subtext throughout the past years, but which may now emerge and tip the scales of this year's vote. It's not just that Idol has pushed product placement beyond what even reasonable people can take, from Coke cups on the judges table and AT&T calls to the Ford advertisements-come-videos with a narrative depth and visual style that makes the Backyardigans look like Citizen Cain.

The fact is that it will be hard for anyone to believe that Perry's act was not orchestrated, at least in part, by people outside of her entourage. That doubt stems from the fact that Adam Lambert, more than any other any previous Idol participant is a professional. Lambert is a manicured, media-genic sexually ambivalent collision between the Cure's Robert Smith and Steven Tyler (that may have nicked Bowie on the way by). His song choices, arrangements and style all resonate with the precise image management reserved for top celebrities.

In comparison Kris Allen, and the recently exiled Danny Gokey, better fit the mold of previous winners, and the Fox audience. Allen is Arkansas bred, with an aw-shucks demeanor more akin to the calamitous Taylor Hicks or the hard done by Chris Daughtry.  Lambert is an undeniably talented performer and a refreshing change to that history, but whether the audience feels entirely comfortable with the contestant being "placed" as product within the show remains to be seen.

It's not necessarily that Katy Perry exposing Idol as corporate sponsored theater rather than competition will necessarily hurt it, but it may - in the same way that Wrestling has given way to MMA. More likely it will sail on, anesthetizing audiences for as many seasons as Simon Cowell has the appetite. If it doesn't sail on, the Adam Lambert Signature Cape may be the official historical moment that Idol jumped the shark. Not a big jump I realize, people don't expect much from it.  What people do expect though is the good story, the American Dream of the undiscovered humble talent rising up against the odds (those half aware will settle for the illusion of that story couched as competition). In either case the depth of that expectation will be tested here.

As ever, in the end Cowell - who may be complicit in the stunt - is well positoned to exploit these tensions. I'm sure he's already arranging a strange cross atlantic duet featuring Adam Lambert and Susan Boyle.

Or the "pimping" of Adam could be carefully orchestrated to further polarize the Gokey fans' anti Adam sentiment and promote the underdog (Kris) that has been wronged which is traditionally the champion of the American public. Oh what a conspiracy! TV is playing with our heads! If Adam gets the number two spot, he has the advantage of artistic freedom when he does his first album which I am sure that he can handle. The question is, if Kris wins, can he survive the AI album that he is required to do? Oh, the tension, the suspense......Thank you American Idol for giving us something to invest our fears and emotions in other than the state of the world economy, global warming, swine flu, the energy crisis global conflicts!

As a long time Idol fan, I am really disgusted by the blatant favoritism shown this year.  If "America" really wants the Cher/Elvis/Edward Cullen mix for the next Idol, so be it...but please, don't take away any shred of integrity the show had by stacking the deck.

I find it hard to believe it was all prearranged. It seems Perry mysteriously "lost the cape" right after displaying it. I HOPE its because an Idol employee was instructed to "grab it."  ;)

Katie has the right to plug a favorite, (just as she has the right to wear that ill-fitting ridiculous outfit) BUT not on the show's stage! She should wave a sign from the audience like everyone else. I am shocked Idol let it happen. It makes the outcome seem so predetermined. On the American Idol stage, everything should be kept a completely even field for each contestant. Whats next? The band playing "God Save the Queen"  when Adam appears? Will all guests get to prance around on stage with their favorite emblazoned on their outfits? Will the judges follow? As much as I enjoy Adam's performance, now I hope someone else wins. This was so WRONG WRONG WRONG. American Idol needs to apologize to the other contestants AND their fans.

Although musicians are free to endorse who they'd like, being as performer on the show (or the judges), should remain in unbiased for consideration of the other contestants and to keep the contest fair.  We've seen that people do not have to win to be successful, but in the judges defense, they probably do not want to have to shell out money for those who they do not believe that the public will support (as we've seen other winners tank).  With this economy, we all want to get the most of our money, maybe this is their way of garunteeing that.  Product placement and commericals are an integral part of the competition, since we all need to see the contestants marketability. After hours, if pros would like to socialize with the very talented not manufactured amatuers, then so be it.  Yes, Adam does have a similair personality to the pros, but maybe that's showing everyone that he really does deserve to win.

I am an Adam fan. I don't like FAVORITISM in the show. Last season, I was ticked when NATASHA BEDINGFIELD put more attention to Archuleta than everyone else. It just makes others feel like dirt. I didn't like it when Jamie Fox endorsed Kris Allen to cut a CD with him while on the show. I didn't like it when Smokey did his Standing O for Adam. Everyone should just be neutral.

I didn't agree with KATY PERRY putting Adam's name on the cape. She just made it a million times harder for ADAM to get voted by showing her FAVORITISM in the show.

She made Kris and Danny feel like dirt. I don't like that because I like Kris and Danny a lot too. I feel angry that Katy Perry did that. UGGH!!!

Since I do not wash this, I can not judge, however it does seem to me that it is nothing but standard American show business and a money making machine.

Pushed to the limits, until it breaks.

I don't watch Idol for the story.  I watch it to be entertained by stand-out singers.  Most years I can find, maybe, one person I like.  In past years it was Kelly, Clay, Bo, Daughtry, and David Cook.  This year it is Adam.

I could care less about the rags to riches part.  I mean, most all of the people have singing experience and have put out self-produced or small-time studio albums.

I used to watch the Home Makeover show, but it spends less and less time showing something being built, than it does the tear-jerking stories of the families.

Like Idol, I don't care about the tearful back story, I want to see hammer and nails, and strutting and singing.

Ah yes, well played: the double-counter orchestration. The tendrils of our distraction tangle so deeply into our complicated relationship to the red light window of the Culture Industry. We avoid approaching but can't turn away.

Stop saying Perry had the 'right' to do anything.  Artist are on Idol to promote their new albums.  There appearances are contracted and litigious.  This isn't Woodstock where everyone is wild and free exercising their rights! They do not have the right to do anything AI doesn't want them to do!

Would Idol allow Perry to bring a Pepsi cup on stage????    Doesn't she have the right to drink whatever she wants?
