Killer Roads: Five horses killed in Durham
The carnage of road smashes continues as five horses were killed in County Durham in the early hours of this morning "Five horses died after running loose on roads including the A1(M) in County Durham. Police said 19 horses escaped from a field next to stables in Nunstainton near Bishop Auckland early on Tuesday when a gate was forced and left open. Three died after being hit by vehicles and one was injured and later put down. Hours later a horse owned by a travelling family was hit by a car in Tindale Crescent, Bishop Auckland, and was put down." I have read a number of articles where gates were forced open and horses have escaped. Cows and deer often escape too. Horses can jump over fences too. These are hazards on busy roads in the countryside particularly at night. In view of the risks, perhaps motorways should reduce their speedlimit and drivers should be more vigilant. Just how fast were these drivers going?
