Kitty Kelley's 'Oprah' Biography: Winfrey's Father And Poverty
Kitty Kelley's Biography Oprah Revealing of Oprah Winfrey's 'Real' Father And Poverty
Kitty Kelley's new explosive unauthorized biography of TV diva Oprah Winfrey continues to make headlines. For her book, Kelley interviewed Winfrey's cousin Katherine Carr Esters who disclosed the name of Winfrey's 'real' father, but did not allow the name to be published until after Oprah Winfrey finds out herself. It is believed Vernon Winfrey is not Oprah's biological father, and that Oprah's mother has not told her daughter who her 'real' father is. Kelley claims she was told that Winfrey knows that Vernon Winfrey is not her 'blood father.' The author says she gave a word of honor not to reveal the identity of Winfrey's father in her book.
In Oprah, Kelley also reveals that Oprah grossly exaggerated the level of poverty that her family lived in when she was brought up. It was earlier alleged by Winfrey that she was forced to wear dresses made of potato sacks and adopt cockroaches as pets in her early years growing up with her grandmother in rural Mississippi. But, Winfrey's cousin says that although the family was not rich, Oprah was actually "spoiled" as a child. She says it was the reason why Winfrey became so successful.
"Where Oprah got that nonsense about growing up in filth and roaches I have no idea," said the relative, Katherine Carr Esters. "I've confronted her and asked, 'Why do you tell such lies?' Oprah told me, 'That's what people want to hear. The truth is boring.' "
Oprah Winfrey became a millionaire at 32 and became the first African American female billionaire in world history. As of September 2009, her total worth is estimated at $2.3 billion by Forbes.com.
Kitty Kelly has written numerous unauthorized biographies in the past, including those of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Reagan, the British Royal Family, and the Bush family.
