What in the World is Kwanzaa?

Admit it, you don't know what Kwanzaa really is. That's OK- the History Channel has you covered:

Kwanzaa is a non-religious African American holiday which celebrates family, community, and culture. It is celebrated for seven days: December 26 - January 1.

The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili. The kinara is the center of the Kwanzaa setting and represents the original stalk from which we came: our ancestry.

I then checked out the official Kwanzaa website (by the founder of Kwanzaa, Dr. Maulana Karenga), which had even more info:
As an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world African community, Kwanzaa brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense. Given the profound significance Kwanzaa has for African Americans and indeed, the world African community, it is imperative that an authoritative source and site be made available to give an accurate and expansive account of its origins, concepts, values, symbols and practice.

It has been 41 years since the holiday was created by Dr. Karenga.

... and I didn't even know where the name came from until last year!
