A Sufi saint’s shrine that was built in 1356 in Sehwan, in the province of Sindh, is the hub of activity these days by millions of his devotees in Pakistan. Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, whose annual death anniversary is celebrated on 18 Shabaan (the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar), was a philosopher and poet who was born in Marwand in a historical city in Afghanistan, where his ancestors had migrated from Iraq.

His date of birth is speculated to be 1187 AD. He traveled extensively in the region and settled down in Sehwan, now Pakistan, teaching religious tolerance, love and affection for humanity.

Update: Sehwan Sharif is throbbing with the beat of drums, singing and dancing, in praise of the saint as the three-day festivities of the annual death anniversary of the venerated Sufi saint has begun from today, i.e. August 21, to celebrate his life and his teachings.
