NP Rank:
Lana Del Rey on SNL: Disastrous Performance from Web Star (Video)
YouTube Sensation Lana Del Ray on Saturday Night Live
Lana Del Rey performed on January 14's episode of Saturday Night Live on the strength of a two-song web EP, making her perhaps the least-experienced musical guest in the show's history, and Natlaie Imburglia was the only other SNL musical guest to appear before releasing a major-label album.
This is is an impressive achievement by the 25-year-old. Lana Del Rey caught the public eye and ear with "Video Games", and "Born to Die", the first single from her forthcoming Interscope album of the same name, rounds out the totality of her public musical offerings so far.
Lana Del Rey's SNL performance, though, did not come close to measuring up the the hype surrounding her work. You can see the Lana Del Rey SNL video below and decide for yourself. Lana Del Rey performed "Video Games" and an unreleased track called "Blue Jeans", and clearly her nerves were getting the better of her. The knives were out on Twitter, from celebs to web comedians to everyday SNL fans.
Here are some of the Twitter comments surrounding Lana Del Rey's SNL appearance:
- Perez Hilton: "It wasn't just me! Seems like the OVERWHELMING consensus is that @LanaDelRey was horrible on SNL last night! http://perez.ly/wympjC
#Bomb" - Flufftronix:" Lana Del Rey 2011-2012
#wehardlyknewye" - Kat George:"A question for Lana Del Rey fans: can you please admit she is terrible and you were wrong?"
- DRUNKHULK: "DRUNK HULK PREFER DRINK TO BE LIKE LANA DEL REY! TALL! AND STIFF!"
- Sam Ray: ""
Lana Del Ray sounded much better on Later... with Jools Holland, it must be said. Our prediction: in a year's time, people will be listening to Lana De Rey's album, and will still not know who any of her haters are.
Yes, her SNL appearance was a gong-show, but, by the time Lana Del Ray's record actually comes out, you won't remember it. Born to Die is available worldwide on January 31, but, for now, Lana Del Rey is experiencing the dark side of fame.
