Leonard Cohen who this year announced he had to come out on the road again because he was broke could have saved himself the trouble as he is now set to make a million from his song Hallelujah! which is released today by the new Simon Cowell X-factor winner Alexendra Burke.

The song is a shoe in for Christmas Number 1.

X-FACTOR

.

Cohen's lyric includes this:

Baby I have been here before

I know this room, I've walked this floor

I used to live alone before I knew you

I've seen your flag on the marble arch

Love is not a victory march

It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Well it will be a financially warm and certainly not broke Christmas for Burke, Cohen and of course Cowell.

Sunday morning, 9am, at the London offices of music svengali Simon Cowell, and the X Factor team was delirious. It was not just the lack of sleep, it was the fact that the public chose a good winner. Twelve million watched the final on Saturday night, an astonishing 8 million voted, and Alexandra Burke duly won. Burke, they say, has not only got the X-factor, she's got the L-factor. Cowell believes the soul singer will go on to be as big as The X Factor's one true superstar, Leona Lewis. The X Factor is the show that makes stars of unknowns. It also makes millions for Cowell when the public gets it right. Often the public gets it wrong - last year's winner, Leon Jackson, humiliatingly charted at No 3 with his latest single, behind Peter Kay's X Factor satirical sideswipe, The Winner's Song. Occasionally, the public gets it disastrously wrong: the first winner, middle-aged crooner Steve Brookstein, has virtually been erased from X Factor history. Once, the public got it absolutely right, and Lewis went on to global success. Now The X Factor believes it has unearthed a star every bit as bright as Leona. Kerching.

She was a natural. I think it is going to be the best Christmas Song ever. It will be even better when she starts writing her own songs because her heart will be in it much more.

Who would have imagined.

From Leonard to John Cale to Jeff Buckley...to Alexendra Burke?

Its karaoke, its sacriledge, its horrible, can't someone condemn the X Factor to the oblivion it deserves and make proper records? What next Leona Lewis dancing around to Anarchy in the UK? Call me a grumpy old music snob but I want real music from real people with real attitude, not a cheap nasty talent show!
