Lil Wayne Rocks Summer Jam, Plans Tupac Tribute
He's had quite the year thus far, and Lil Wayne was back in the spotlight at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey for Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert on Sunday (June 5).
The "Lollipop" hitmaker joined a lineup that included Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes and Drake as he entertained the crowd with a variety of songs including his hot single "How To Love".
Aside from his Summer Jam efforts, a TV special surrounding Weezy is set to air this Sunday, June 12 on MTV.
During the show, titled "Lil Wayne Unplugged," the 28-year-old rapper reveals that he will pay homage to one of his idols, the late Tupac Shakur.
"I knew because this is my 'Unplugged', I said, 'I want to do some kind of tribute to one of those great artists,'" Wayne explained of the decision to perform the fallen MC's 1996 single "Hail Mary." "It's just something about 'Pac and I," he said after the show's taping last month.
"I picked that second verse, 'Penitentiaries is packed with promise makers,' and I was like, 'That whole verse is just perfect '" they never realized the precious time that they wasting.'"
Following the taping of his performance for "Unplugged", Weezy spoke with the L.A. Times about his latest achievement.
"It was humbling just to be a part of," he said. "As an artist that's watched the game as closely as I did, to be on ''¹..."Unplugged' is a high honor. I've gotten people that haven't texted me in a long time, text me today saying congratulations. It is that kind of thing. I felt great about it."
Making fans wait a little bit longer for his highly-anticipated forthcoming album, Lil Wayne has moved back the release date of "Tha Carter IV."
The hip hop phenom has once again pushed back the debut of his newest musical effort, delaying its release, which was supposed to happen later this month (June 21).
According to Young Money President Mack Maine's talk with MTV, Weezy is "still perfecting a few things, he's a perfectionist ... changing a few lines," adding, "If you calculate all of that, by the time we would've finished mixing, we wouldn't have met the [original] due date to turn in the album."
Lil Wayne's record is now scheduled to drop August 29.
