Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson Break Up Over Twitter
A new feat of celebrity tweeting hath been reached, dear friends.
Over the weekend, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson became the latest celebrity couple to break up — only they did it in true web 2.0, social media style — the couple made their split official over the uber-popular microblogging site Twitter.
All the cool kids are doing it these days, so why not them?
After all, a breakup in 140 characters or less is even less personal and less courteous than the comparatively romantic text message breakup. Soon all that will be required will be a single emoticon or some lone punctuation mark to indicate one's newly attachment-free phase of livin'...
Or better yet, perhaps it will just be the deafening silence of a status-less update.
Lohan and Ronson have been dating since at least May 2008, and have been living together for six months. But Ronson reportedly hired a locksmith to change the locks on her home on Saturday afternoon, following a fight Friday night at a party Ronson threw for her sister, Charlotte.
Ronson had asked security to block Lohan from the party. An angry Lohan then reportedly sent her a message on Twitter saying: "So -- you win, you broke my heart. now go away. i loved you."
Lohan, via email, later denied the split to Us magazine, then confirmed she was "taking a brief break so I can focus on myself" to E! Online. Ronson changed her status on her own MySpace page to "single" today.
UPDATE | April 7, 2009 — Alas, the saga doesn't end there.
On Tuesday, rumors began to circulate that Samantha Ronson and her family are seeking a restraining order against Lindsay Lohan to prevent her from acting out against her former flame.
But perhaps this tech-savvy ex-couple should consider extending the ban on contact to all forms of electronic communication.
Could this call for a retweeting order to prevent Lohan from Twittering about the breakup?
Concerned members of Samantha Ronson's family are reportedly planning to obtain a restraining order against the DJ's ex-girlfriend Lindsay Lohan following the couple's split.
