Mahendra Singh Dhoni, recovered sufficiently from a sore back to take the field, won the toss and chose to bat first in the third and final One-Day International against Pakistan at the Feroze Shah Kotla in New Delhi on Sunday (January 6).

There had been some doubt over Dhoni’s availability after he sustained the injury during a fielding session on Saturday. Dhoni has been India’s most consistent batsman in this series, which Pakistan lead 2-0, with an unbeaten hundred and an unbeaten half-century in the first two matches in Chennai and Kolkata respectively.

India handed an ODI debut to Shami Ahmed, the 22-year-old medium-pacer from Bengal who came in for Ashok Dinda, the right-arm paceman who is also from Bengal, and brought in Ajinkya Rahane for Virender Sehwag.

Pakistan made one change to the side that won the first two games comprehensively, fielding Umar Akmal, the middle-order batsman, ahead of Azhar Ali.

Teams:

India: Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt, wk), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Shami Ahmed.

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal (wk), Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Umar Gul, Mohammad Irfan.
