Australia will go into the fourth Test against India at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi under strange circumstances. Shane Watson, who was axed from the side after failing to produce a presentation on team improvement, could find himself appointed captain if Michael Clarke does not recover on time from a troubled back.

Clarke, who did not train on Wednesday, said he would do everything he could to be fit in time for the final Test but chances of his appearing in the concluding Test match seem very unreal. That could leave Watson to work with Coach Mickey Arthur, as the Australians seek to avoid a whitewash. 

Australia would no doubt be dealt a huge blow if Australia were to take the field without Clarke, who has been their batsmen in the series. The visitors' problems do not end there. Mitchell Starc, who defied India with scores of 99 and 34 in the third Test has already been ruled out but with the availability of the four sacked players, the team management would breathe a sigh of relief. With Watson certain to return to the playing XI, either James Pattinson or Mitchell Johnson is sure to get a slot in Delhi.
