The South African cricket team begins its preparations for the Champions Trophy in England in June with a 5 match ODI series against a mercurial Pakistan side that begins in the beautiful city of roses, Bloemfontein on the 10th of March. South Africa coach Gary Kirsten has emphasized the need for a settled unit in preparation for the ICC event in June and going by the thinking in the Proteas camp, they will look to fire on all cylinders in this series.

The Pakistanis on the other hand will be buoyed with their first consolation win of the tour in the one off T20 international in Centurion and will go into this ODI series with a renewed sense of belief. Here is how the two sides are expected to line up in the first ODI.

South Africa:

The Proteas are back with their ‘A’ side for this series and the return of the experienced Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith brings about a great deal of solidity to their top order. The absence of talisman all-rounder Jacques Kallis, however, will be felt in the camp given the balance he brings to the side. AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have emerged as young leaders in the Proteas camp and their form and contribution will be vital for the South Africans at the start of the series.

Inexperienced batsmen Farhan Behardien, David Miller and Colin Ingram, will probably have to fight for 2 batting slots between them. Colin Ingram is highly rated across the country but he has a lot to prove at this level and he is likely to come in at No.3. Farhan Behardien has been favoured more in the recent past and he could come in at No.6 for the Proteas. In the absence of Kallis, the all-rounder slot is likely to be taken by seam bowler Ryan McLaren, who will probably fit in at No.7

South Africa will probably go in with the customary 3 pacers, 1 spinner combination for most of the series which means the experienced Robin Peterson is likely to keep fellow left arm spinner Aaron Phangiso out of the side as the lone spinner in the XI. South Africa’s menacing pace duo of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel is back together after a series of experiments with the bowling combination in previous series’ and they will be supported by the tall left arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who could edge out young prospect Kyle Abbot.
