Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat in their first Test against Bangladesh, being played at the Galle International Stadium, on Friday under bright and breezy conditions.
Sri Lanka handed a Test debut to Kithuruwan Vithanage, the left-handed middle-order batsman after Mahela Jayawardene was ignored for the game because of a finger injury.
Sri Lanka have a new Test captain, their youngest ever, in Angelo Mathews, and with Prasanna Jayawardene being left out, Dinesh Chandimal will be performing the wicketkeeping duties.
“It’s a typical Galle wicket,” said Mathews, explaining his call to bat first as Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, also said he would have batted first.
Bangladesh left out Tamim Iqbal, who suffered an injury in his right hand during the Bangladesh Premier League last month. Anamul Haque, the 20-year-old batsman, and Mominul Haque, the left-arm spinner, were the two Bangladesh players making their debut.
