London: New Year's Day Chaos on the trains

Some New Year's Day trains were cancelled at short notice at about ten o'lock at night, and trains were diverted to other stations.

Unfortunately due to the crowds and short notice many people missed their trains.

My brother was not aware the trains at Waterloo East closed at ten, he would have thought that unreasonable on New Year's Eve.

He then had to go to another train station but it took a long time because the crowds. He missed the last ones.

He finally ended up at Victoria Station hoping to take a train to Sevenoaks, with hoards of other unexpected New Year Stragglers. He said it was too crowded to even use the few pubs still open

Fighting also broke out in the queues.

The first train out  was at 7am in the morning but it was cancelled. The station was freezing. He arrived home at about 9am. No one was handing out free cups of hot drinks.

This was his first trip to London for New Year's Eve.

I had a thought about meeting NY in London but been told it will be really bad. And it's even slear it will be like that. A calm NY at home, more than 2000km up north was fine.

I stayed at home for about 2 weeks. Curled up with a book and Now Public, with the odd excursion to the local shop to get some bread quickly before the supplies run out. I even cancelled my holiday as the weather was just too bad. It has been a disaster but it is better not to travel and stay at home, if one can.

They also closed most of the airports too

I had no idea they cut the train schedule so short - unexpected.

That's a shame Beaulieu, it used to be a tradition to go into town on New Year's Eve without having to worry too much about transport home.
