Lost Series Finale: What to Expect, What to Hope For
The Lost series finale airs on May 23, after six seasons of mystery both maddening and fascinating. The series finale airs at 9pm local time on ABC and its affiliates, and will run for two and a half hours, including copious commercial breaks. Those that can't watch live will be seeking out torrents and live streams in force.
Note: this post contains spoilers for S06E16, but not for the finale itself. No Lost season finale spoilers here. I wouldn't do that to you.
The Lost series finale will be preceded with Lost: The Final Journey, a two-hour series recap. Once the finale is over, Jimmy Kimmel Live will have an "Aloha to Lost" special. This Lost series finale preview brings us a few plot elements to ponder as we wait to see who leaves the island... and who does not.
Clearly the main characters in the alternate reality are converging upon the charity concert, where Jack's son is playing; Jack's son is the only character so far who only exists in one of the realities.
Things We Care About:
- What's up with the numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42)
- Whether or not John Locke is/was really "special"
- Why the Lostaways are candidates, as opposed to anyone else in the world
- What Widmore really wanted with the island; we'll probably never know, thanks to Ben "quick draw" Linus
- How Jacob knew about, and could find, the candidates
- Whether or not Desmond and Penny will be reunited
- Who were the original hostiles/Others?
- Richard: dead or alive?
- Juliet! Is she going for alt-coffee with Sawyer, or what?
Also, how will Jack deal with being the new Jacob? Will he remain on the island, or ditch it at the first opportunity?
Of course, some of the mysteries can only be answered in the literal sense, and where's the fun in that? Remember what happened when George Lucas tried to explain the Force? What were they, midichlorians? I don't even want to bother checking the spelling on that crap. Yeah, some mysteries are better left unsolved, as they make the world of the story more believably wide. So let's itemize some of the...
Things We Don't Care About:
- What the Smoke Monster is Made Of
- Why the Frozen Donkey Wheel is Frozen
- How Desmond's Time Travel Works; it just does, brotha
- The physical source of the island's strange properties
So, we want a satisfying conclusion to the overall narrative, beyond "they all went home, the end". We care about why people are doing stuff.
We do not care about the nuts-and-bolts elements of how the island works:
"How does the frozen donkey wheel actually work?"
"Well, it bends time by altering temperature or whatever."
"...Oh."
See? No fun.
Check out Lostpedia for analysis of every conceivable element of the series. Have a look at Television Without Pity's Lost forums for a surprisingly civil discussion of each episode.
Some Bold Predictions Based on No Real Foreknowledge
- Hurley survives
- Ben gets to run the island, but will be alone
- Kate dies
- Okay, Kate won't die, but you smiled when you read that
This story features extra bullet-points to celebrate how often the Lost characters cock their guns for no reason.
Enjoy the Lost series finale.

I can't wait for the end, but will be so sad when it does end!
I feel like I need to know about alt-LA Desmond - who is he really? I agree with the numbers and John Locke and just want Ben to get a really great ending, he's my favorite!
