Lux Interior, Founder of the Cramps, Dies at 62
Lux Interior, founding member of seminal punk outfit The Cramps, has died of heart failure at age 62. He is survived by his wife and co-rocker, Poison Ivy. The Cramps enjoyed a career spanning more than thirty years.
From the bowels of New York's CBGB to t-shirts of disaffected teens around the globe, The Cramps not only influenced underground music, but also fashion. I first heard of them in junior high school, where the punkest of the punks would sport the distinctive t-shirt with that dripping green font. We didn't have proper goths at my junior high, so that subculture presented itself as an element of the punk crowd.
The Cramps were founded in New York around 1976 by Lux Interior (born Erick Purkhiser in Stow, Ohio) and the guitarist Poison Ivy (Kristy Wallace) with a distinct musical and visual style.
By "distinct musical and visual style", think rockabilly zombified punk. One can easily draw a line between The Cramps and White Zombie in terms of mixing previously-unmixable musical and culural elements, like drive-in kitsch, punk, metal, and country-western.
Lux Interior's rock ethos can (in my mind) be summed up by this quote:
“Rock ’n’ roll has absolutely nothing to do with music. It’s much more than music. Rock ’n’ roll is who you are. You can’t call the Cramps music. It’s noise, rockin’ noise.”
