LEONARD COHEN - Closing Time

The Material Girl, The Coug, and The Man With the Golden Voice have all been named to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - and it's good to see Madonna, Mellencamp, and Cohen finally be recognized for their incredibly diverse musical careers and wide-ranging contributions to popular music.

The ever-evolving Madonna was announced as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on Thursday along with John Mellencamp, The Ventures, Leonard Cohen and The Dave Clark Five.

A panel of 600 industry figures selected the five acts to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 10 in New York.

"The 2008 inductees are trailblazers — all unique and influential in their genres," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman said in a statement. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll itself."

But in this age of manic remixes and maddening music mashups, who knows what lurks in the GarageBand darkness of a bedroom iPod DJ's collection...and I have an imperceptible fear that we may yet have to suffer through that timeless mashup classic: Suzanne, It Hurts So Good (Like A Virgin).

Let's hope not.

That mashup would be a classic indeed. I'm scared to imagine what lurid feats might happen to the oranges all the way from China though.
