Madonna - Like A Prayer [HOPE FOR HAITI NOW LIVE]

Madonna is now bigger than The Beatles according to a new chart based on airplay and public performances in the UK over the last decade.

The People's Artist Chart was complied for BBC Radio 2 by royalties body PPL.

Women artists might currently dominate the charts but Madonna was the only female artist to get into the top 5 of this chart with hits like Holiday, Material Girl and Into The Groove propelling her ahead of former chart toppers The Beatles.

The full top ten was: 1. Madonna 2. The Beatles 3. Robbie Williams 4. Queen 5. Take That 6. Sugababes 7. Elton John 8. Elvis Presley 9. Abba 10. Coldplay

The Rolling Stones came in at number 19.

This is of course only based on UK sales and performances and it would be interesting to see similar US and World charts for the same period.

The Fab Four were previously accepted to have been the most-played band in the country. But they are now second to Madge, 51 - whose hits include Material Girl and Ray Of Light.

Madonna has topped a chart of the most played artists of the last decade - nudging The Beatles into second place.
