Malcom Gladwell, the author of Blink and The Tipping Point, decided to focus on "The Story of Success" in his next book, Outliers, by explaining where it comes from, and why. With the release of an excerpt, expectations have been raised to stratospheric heights, as readers await Gladwell's exploration of expertise and genius by examining the "outliers" in our society.
I found myself having with the way we explain the careers of really successful people. You know how you hear someone say of Bill Gates or some rock star or some other outlier—"they're really smart," or "they're really ambitious?' Well, I know lots of people who are really smart and really ambitious, and they aren't worth 60 billion dollars.

Even if you don't agree with his methods, Gladwell's books are wonderful consciousness raisers, forcing readers to actually think about how the world works. Once people consider the status quo, they can challenge it.

In an excerpt posted on The Guardian's site, Malcolm Gladwell studies the 'tipping point' of expertise and why experts agree that mastery of a skill occurs at 10,000 hours. It's an interesting study, what we consider to be genius and what he reveals as simple, hard work. Passion does enter the equation, but it is simply a motivator -- something to encourage a person to continue practicing.

This idea - that excellence at a complex task requires a critical, minimum level of practice - surfaces again and again in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is a magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours.
