Man killed for being gay in New York City
Marc Carson was a 32 year old gay man. He was a gay man, because now he is dead. He is dead because of a bullet from one Elliot Morales, a man one year older but who had a much different life path. A path built on hate and fear. Morales, a violent criminal with a record, killed Mr. Carson because of Carson's homosexuality. This happened in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. One of the most gay friendly areas of the nation. But like all gay men, that does not make you completely safe from violence against you.
Morales and two other men, confronted Mr. Carson and his companion on the street. Allegedly Morales (or one of the other two with him) stated, "What are you, gay wrestlers?"
After following and harassing Carson and his companion, Morales asked Carson, "'Do you want to die here?'" Morales then proceeded to shoot Carson, fled and was caught soon after. Why this hasn't been a bigger story, I don't know. Morales is part of a continuum. Many people hate gay men, but they don't use violence.
They might call gay men, or who they believe are gay, homophobic names. Then others use violence, but don't use a gun. They might use their fists instead. Of course, many justify their actions based on a supposed god, but some just hate for the sake of hating those different from them. We saw this with the Nazis persecuting Jews and we saw this with Turks persecuting Armenians.
Morales killed a man, but he didn't kill a movement.
