This year, Memorial Day falls on May 25, 2009.

In the lead-up to the long weekend, we're seeing a big educational push online, with activities and art projects aimed at younger kids. For example, Memorial Day coloring sheets, Memorial Day fact lists (warning: old-school clip art), and regional public event lists are all the rage today.

Created by order in 1868, Memorial Day is a designated time to decorate the graves of those who died in defense of their country. Observance of the holiday was far more widespread in the North, which is unsurprising given the circumstances of its creation: the end of the Civil War.

Memorial Day is celebrated with parades, and families take the opportunity of a spring day off to enjoy picnics, barbecues and outings. Also, the long weekend is host to many sporting events, including the Indy 500, which I'm sure will get some coverage here.

Memorial Day Order:

The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.

Not to be confused with Veterans Day, which honors those who served in the military, living or dead, coinciding with Remembrance Day in Europe.

It's also Fleet Week in New York City as military personnel are walking all around town.  These servicemen and women are also enjoying the local welcome in various forms from free meals to juice, coffee, and random thank yous on the streets and places.

I think it is important to honour all our ancestors and it is the way we do it that is a reflection of our societies morals and respect for life it self.

Oh, are y'all having a holiday?  Strange what one loses track of stuck at home day after day.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone.  Please drive carefully and soberly.

An interesting observation, Jordan. In fact, as a small boy, I recall that July 4 was significant as much for the fall of Vicksburg as it was for Independence Day.

It took a hundred years for this nation to heal. Sometimes I fear that we have forgotten not only those who paid the ultimate price for our liberty, but also the lessons that have been learned.

Great post. Thanks.

As a veteran, I always make it a point to visit the graves during Memorial Day weekend. This gives me that precious time for reflection and pay respects to those who have gone before.

Buckeye Lake is small town with a big heart. The parade lasted about 10 minutes but you can fill the pride of the community that honored our fallen love ones that shaped our lives and especially the one that gave their lives to preserve or freedom.
