According to Harry Knowles at Ain't It Cool News, MGM Studios has moved production status of the 23rd James Bond film, starring Daniel Craig and directed by Sam Mendes, from "delayed" to "canceled".

MGM's chronic cash-flow problem has also hamstrung production on The Hobbit, whose production schedule has doubled from three years to six, causing director Guillermo Del Doro to abandon the project and endangering Ian McKellen's involvement.

007 fans will not have a problem with Harry Knowles' expletive-filled post, linked below.

NOW... Apparently all development on the next James Bond flick is dead.

This doesn't necessarily spell the death of the franchise, but Bond 23 at the moment is... skewered. One sympathizes.

Should Bond be back, it could be with a different above-the-line team, as Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes are busy guys. By the time MGM gets its act together, they could well have just moved on to other projects.
