After Death, Michael Jackson Signs Record-breaking Deal with Sony

Even after death, Michael Jackson is able to break records. Jackson's estate just signed a 7-year, $200 million dollar contract with Sony Music.

The guaranteed contract calls for 10 projects in the next seven years, with an extra $50 million dollars on the table if certain targets are met. The contract will expire in 2017.

The King of Pop's estate has signed the biggest recording deal in history: a $200 million guaranteed contract with Sony Music Entertainment for 10 projects over seven years, according to a person familiar with the deal.

Of the seven albums to be released, one will be of never-before-released Jackson recordings that will drop in November. Other projects could include a video game release, a DVD compilation of Jackson music videos and a re-release of Off the Wall, Jackson's 1979 album.

One of the projects that will be connected to the contract was the 2-disc album that was packaged with the release of the MJ documentary This Is It. That album has sold 5 million copies, and Michael Jackson has sold over 31 million copies since his death at the age of 50.

Michael Jackson's Record $200 Million Dollar Deal

The deal eclipses previous record-setting contracts with music artists, including Madonna's $120 million dollar and Jay Z's $150 million dollar contracts with Live Nation Entertainment.

The deal will help Jackson's estate pay off the dead pop singer's debt, which some have estimated to be as high as $400 million dollars. It's been speculated that the Michael Jackson estate has brought in close to $100 million dollars since the death of Jackson before signing the contract with Sony.
