This evening, I learned about an incident involving Michael Lacey, executive editor of the Village Voice, and his recent use of the “N” word during a Society of Professional Journalists awards banquet in Phoenix.
In researching the incident further, I learned that none of the “big boys” in the mainstream news media — ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Los Angeles Times or New York Times — have seen fit to cover the racist comment committed by the leader of the well-known alternative weekly. Instead, only a few of the smaller media outlets around the nation have touched the topic.
Take a look at this Arizona Family video of the speech and see if you think his comments deserve as much attention, let’s say, as radio talk show host Don Imus received.

BMCWrites, I like this story. It's good stuff. Then it is only fair, those this guy slighted, should be able to use every derogatory word in the book against him. Do you really want Mr. Race Card Evangelical Preachers, both whose names escape me, being from Canada, anyways I would like to think we do not have this problem here.

My View (Opinion):
Michael Lacey has offered an apology - “It is understandable that my comments about a dead colleague rankled listeners. My words, meant to honor a friend, were inappropriate. All present have my sincere apology. It is regrettable that any phrase of mine offended those attending a First Amendment awards banquet. We accepted these honors on the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s assassination. It is a sorry affair indeed that I should detract from the on-going civil rights struggle that continues to unfold on streets Valleywide.” New Times Article on 4.12.2008
Yes it was a sad moment in long admirable history of this Journalist, Michael Lacey. On April 4th, 2008 in the valley of the sun (Phoenix, Az.) there had been many twists on this day - most for good, just and rightous purpose in Civil rights of this days meaning. Happy Hero Day - April 4th Here at NowPublic.
To be quite honest, Michael Lacey has taken a stand for Journalists throughout the valley of the sun and beyond. What many may not realize is that he uses our Constituently right of the First Amendment to protect the rights of Journalists everywhere in this country this last year. My Article "Freedom of Press was tested this week and failed terribly" was of this paper and individual. Had he not used these inalienable right to spoke and publish the various Articles and papers he and his staff have created throughout time. We may not have known of interests that where important to its readers and citizens of the United States, especially here in Phoenix considering what was important and was not and had not been covered until lately by other media outlets here in Phoenix.
Michael Lacey stands where few journalist, editors and publication have been willing. In this day and age of our wide media outlets (old and new) this lone paper, Editors, Journalist, Staff give the rights to fredom of speech a new meaning of what it was originally meant for - Using it to it full intended purpose to stand up for our civil rights as citizens to be properly informed of our government actions (locally). Something which has been in question for awhile.
