My guess is it is a belated Columbus day celebration? Once again, everyone is confused as to whether to celebrate Christopher Columbus as an Italian or a Spaniard (just kidding)!

He was Spanish I believe,he worked for spain,might have been Italian

You are correct. (I have seen his tomb which is in the cathedral of Sevilla, Spain. He was born in Genoa, Italy.)
