Mick Karn, Bassist For Japan Dies Of Cancer At 52 (video tribute)

Mick Karn, the bassist for the 1980s new wave group Japan has died of Cancer. Mick Karn was 52. A statement was posted to the Nick Karn fan webiste.


It's with profound sadness that we have to inform you that Mick finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at 4.30pm today, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all.

The lead singer of Japan honored his band mate and friend.


Leading the tributes was his Japan bandmate, singer David Sylvian, who said: 'May his suffering be at an end, may he find eternal peace.'

Duran Duran bassist John Taylor remembered Karn 'one of the great visual and sound stylists of the late-70s/early-80s'


Born Andonis Michaelides in Nicosia, Cyprus, Karn played with Japan from their formation in 1974 until their split in 1982, and again in 1991 during a brief reunion under the new name Rain Tree Crow...Karn moved back to Cyprus in 2004 with his wife and son, but returned to London last year. Following his cancer diagnosis, several appeals were launched via Mickkarn.net to help cover medical costs and offer financial support to his family.
