Miramax Films Out of Business: Weinstein Bros. Studio Closes

Miramax Films, the prominent indie film company that has produced several Oscar winners, is shutting its doors. Today it was announced the Disney-owned indie film studio will close its New York and Los Angeles offices. The company, founded by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, was a cultural force in the 90s, leading the so-called "indie" film boom with the release of pictures like "Pulp Fiction," "Good Will Hunting," and "Shakespeare in Love."

Over the years, Bob and Harvey Weinstein earned a reputation for their bombastic personalities. They also earned a reputation for revolutionizing how studios market their films, particularly when it comes to Oscar campaigns. Miramax Films aggressively campaigned for Oscars and succeeded with big wins for films like "Shakespeare in Love" and "Chicago." Other studios followed suit.

Despite its stellar past, Miramax Films had fallen on hard time of late under the leadership of Daniel Battsek. Many filmmakers are mourning the loss of Miramax.
