Miss Calif. Gets Standing Ovation for Anti-Gay Marriage Stance

Miss California, the now infamous proponent of "opposite marriage" Carrie Prejean, received a standing ovation at an awards show this week, as a show of support for the pageant contestant's anti-gay remarks during the Miss USA competition last weekend.

Fans have overhwhelmingly refused to criticize Prejean for her statements and she has been steadfast in her refusal to apologize or acknowledge her prejudice — claiming that the issue is "not about being politically correct, it's about being biblically correct."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, anti-gay Americans everywhere have chosen to celebrate Prejean's utter ignorance on the issue as some form of dubiously-contrived political achievement.

It seems that's what staying "true to your beliefs" will get you. Then again, it's hard to have regret about something that you barely understand.

(Perhaps a little Prop 8 background reading might be in order?)

Miss California Carrie Prejean received a swell of support at the Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards with the crowd giving her a standing ovation when she came out to introduce a performance.

Esta let's agree to disagree.  I've watched the question and answer over and over again.  She was asked with the lead in that Vermont Legislators had recently approved same sex marriage.  Did she think it should be legalized in all states.

She replied that in her family and her upbringing gave her the belief that a marriage should be between a man and a woman.  She said she meant no offence to anyone and also that she was glad that she lived in a country where people could chose.

The charge that it might have cost here the Miss USA crown is hogwash and was discounted by Donald Trump yesterday who owns the pageant.

In Canada the same sex issue was resolved by the Supreme Court.  Our Charter of Rights protects minorities and therefore same sex marriage is now legal.  If you leave issues like that to the majority as they did in Proposition 8, the result is inevitable.

Anyways that is the opinion of an old poke from Alberta.

what?!?!?!?!

prop 8 was NOT about gay marriage!  i was in CA at the time and everyone i knew who was voting against gay marriage was NOT anti-gay !!!  they voted against gay marriage because ALL churches in CA would have basically been FORCED to perform gay marriages if it became law.  if that wasn't the case, and the churches could refuse to marry a gay couple, then gay marriage would be legal today...  this is about forcing beliefs on others.

so stop saying "anti-gay" ... you sound silly.  it would be more accurate to call you "anti-christian" than to say that anyone who opposes government control over their church is "anti-gay".

... but to be fair, there are a few anti-gay christians out there (i've only heard about them, never met any), just like there are muslim terrorists ...

bettermakings, I don.t think I said propostion 8 was anti-gay.  I merely said that issues like that sometimes can.t be resolved without a court.  By the way I consider myself a Christian and I.m not anti-gay.  I hate the spreading of hate on either side.  Whether the issue is justified by the bible, the Q'oran or otherwise.  The whole issue is about human rights.  There is perhaps room for discussion on how to get there - but in the end everyone has the right to be happy.

I believe in Alberta ministers are not required to perform same sex marriages if it is against their personal belief, that includes Commissionaires of Marriage for civil ceremonies.

I also believe people must be allowed to express their opinion without fear of being punished.

I think who is being condemned here is Carrie Prejean.  She was asked a trick question, which in my mind, should not have been part of this competition.  Everyone knows how divisive this issue is.  What was outrageous was Hilton's response to it.  Nobody is talking about how he called her a Bitch.

My God, has it come to the point that we can't have a civil conversation anymore when it comes to the gay issue.  Sometimes I wonder who is holding who hostage.

Both Obama and Clinton, during the campaign said that marriage should be between a man and a woman.  So I ask why are we picking on a 19 year old who was raised in a Christian belief and stated it.

I don.t condone that she is now being used by those against gay marriage, including Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly.  Take the emotion out of the issue and let's talk.

I like how you put that, yup,  "it's hard to have regret about something that you barely understand."

I've been living in Los Angeles for a year now and it truly breaks my heart that animals have more rights than gay people do in this state. Proposition 2 (the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act) was passed and so was Proposition 8, which eliminated the right of same-sex couples to get married. I think the question was a little unfair and would have put any contestant on the spot, however, I think Prejean could have at least answered the question better without making herself look like an idiot. I have no problem with anyone sticking up for their beliefs, but if you're out to win a competition, then certainly it can't be too difficult to hold your tongue when you're asked a loaded question.
