Jimena Navarrete From Mexico Has Won Miss Universe 2010 (Photos Link Below), But Did Miss Philippines 2010 Contestant Venus Raj Give the Wrong Reply to a Judge's Question?

Miss Philippines 2010 contestant Venus Raj was heavily favored to win Miss Universe 2010 on Monday night, especially after the online poll put her in first place going in to the competition. However, the beauty finished in fifth place, and Jimena Navarrete won the crown.

So what went wrong?

Many are wondering if Venus Raj's answer in response to a question from judge William Baldwin may have caused her to lose her standing and her chance of winning.

When asked by Mr. Baldwin "What is the biggest mistake that you’ve ever made in your life and what did you do to make it right?", Venus Raj replied (paraphrased)

"In my 22 years of existence I can say there is nothing major. Because I am very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So, thank you so much that I am here, thank you thank you so much."

Many think this answer essentially brushes off the question as it is expected that in 22 years of life there would be one mistake at least that someone would like to put right.

Jimena Navarrete gave an answer to judge Evan Lysacek's question about unsupervised Internet use that many feel helped her secure the crown. She replied:

“I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time. We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”

What do you think of Venus Raj's answer? Do you think she should have said something else?

She could still answer along the same line, at least how she started it, but could have give a bit brilliance by saying: "In my 22 years of existence, I am thankful that there is nothing that I may consider a big mistake... thanks, to my family who have guided and supported me well. There might however be some minor setbacks along the way but the fact that I am here right now is proof that I have triumphantly worked it out."

very nice way to answer this question. if that would be venus' response to baldwin's question, this will be a winning streak and Philippines would regain the miss universe title after 39 years

Absolutely this cost her the crown.  No one escapes life without problems; it is how we deal with problems that helps define who we are.  You can draw on problems but in a positive setting. For example, she could have said something like: "One of the biggest mistakes I have made in my life is that I could make all the positive changes in the world by myself.  I have learned that I need the help and support of not only my family and friends, but other inspired people in the world, ready to help, to make this world a better place to live". That would have given her a high score and she could have won it all. Only a "Mayabang" responds the way she did.

It is impossible that in 22 years of her life existence....it is unrealistic to say that she did not commit any single mistake in her life, right? I might as well answer...In my 22 years of existence. I have done some mistakes in my life...some of them are  light..and some of them are serious. How do I manage to make them right? simply by not running away but by dealing with them no matter how hard they are...because at the end of the day you will soon realize that making a mistake is a blessing..it is not only making you wiser person but tougher in dealing with most life difficulties.

First of all my Congratulations to Miss Universe 2010, and most specially to my fellow bicolana, Ms. Venus Raj for trying her very best though landing only 5th in the pageant. I am proud of you Venus for showing what it takes to compete among the best beauties in the universe. The comment  from denver was quite right and Venus wanted to really express her answer coming from her heart with all honesty and humility but it didnt impresses the judges.Watching the photos where in they were wearing their evening gown Venus was so "regal" in fact she really gave the gown its life...if the crown was not for her then it has its reasons...who knows she might  surprise us all that one day this marvelous lady will also conquer that prestigious title just continue pursuing your dreams Venus, we might not get what's expected of us but we can always hope and prove to the world to our country in particular that you can still make a difference, its never too late...Again Congratulations Ms Philippines.Ice of Legazpi City

It is unrealistic to say no major, major mistake.  Because everybody makes mistakes....life is not Perfect! Or she can answer honestly committed some mistakes along the way and had make it right not by running from them but by dealing with them no matter how hard it is.  That at the end of the day that she soon realized that mistakes are a blessings, because it is not only making you wiser but it makes you tougher person in dealing with life most difficulties. Hay! super sayang ang Crown! Pero Congrats na din in making it to the top 5. Mabuhay ka...Ms Venus!

Two thoughts:  My first impression was that her response indicated an arrogance that was inappropriate for the title.  My second thought; this was a question that is from an American cultural perspective where we share and bare our flaws with anyone and everyone.  I think in Venus's culture this would not be an appropriate question since it would not be considered appropriate to expose one's flaws to the world.  At any rate, I am happy Miss Mexico won.  Despite the amazing beauty of Miss Phillipines; I thought Miss Mexico would be the winner as she seemed not only beautiful but less plastic than the other contestants.

I don't think it's an indication

I'm still proud of you Ms. Venus, it's really hard to be a contestant facing the judges and the crowds.  I know you did your major major best.

This without question cost her the crown. I don`t think she should have made it that far to begin with. The fact that she had made it that far, and winning may have hinged on her answer this was clearly was ridiculous. The funny thing about this is Fillipina women are notorious for not accepting ever being wrong. My girlfrienf of seven years is Fillipino, and I have had other American friends with similiar experiences. When she gave her answer I busted out with laughter knowing that she had just cost herself the crown. I guess we all know what her biggest mistake in her life is now. The fact is nobody is perfect and because she couldn`t acknowledge that she was imperfect or had ever made a mistake is sad. People shouldn`t feel bad for her because they practice answering these tough questions on the fly. A more appropriate answer along the lines of wanting to display her affection for her family would have been the answer by Denver at the top of the page. Bottom line is the question wasn`t answered correctly, Miss Mexico was Beautiful, I thought Miss Ukraine could have won as well. In spite of the lousy answer she also was too thin in comparison to the other contestants.

She did not say that she did not ever made a mistake. What she said is that she did not make a MAJOR mistake, and even said the word major twice to qualify her answer. And she could have been saying the truth, that there was no major problem in her life... At any rate, 5th place finish is fine for this ravishing beauty.

Denver and Glad2bpinay are both on the dot. Her answer was safe and unrealistic. Nobody is perfect so no judge nor anyone watching would buy her line of being mistake-proof.But there's one more angle here.. looking at the video again and again, all four contestants ahead of her answered in a poised & comfortable way. They paused for few seconds and answered. After all, they did have 30secs to deliver their messages. On the other hand, our Miss Philippines seemed to rushed on grabbing the mic and let her nerves get the better of her.As if her goal was to get into the top 5 and that's it and "I am famous in my home country now." The competition is bout getting 1st place.. 2nd and 3rd are like consolation prizes. WITH HER ANSWER, SHE STAYS IN 5TH PLACE. SO CONGRATS TO HER! SHE WON WHAT SHE DESERVED >> 5TH!!

she could have answered it  in tagalog- the problem was she had a major major hard time expressing her thoughts in english..

2
DonKibad

There's nothing so wrong with her english, hello?! Why dont u try being on that stage with a lot of pressure, I guess tagalog or english, it wouldnt be easy to formulate thoughts in a flash?! gosh people.. it's so easy for you to say this and that.. but ur also not being realistic urselves...

2
Myra Aure

I totally agree with you DonKibad!!! Other people can easily say that Venus should say like this and that, could have answered better by articulating her statement, and so on. But I can't imagine how these people can also deliver or utter an answer if they're on the stage, telecast and viewed globally, plus the pressure of delivering the answer as quickly as possible. Commenting and critizing is as easy as eating a bowl of rice porridge. The answer that Venus gave to Mr. Baldwin's question at that time, was the one that comes from her mind and heart, and we must respect that. If she thinks in her 22 years of existence, she didn't encounter yet a major, major problem, can't we just respect it? Who else would wish most for her to win, is it not her family and herself? She did all her best already. The beautiful lass from Bicol has gone through a lot of pains, and for her, pains is not synonymous to problems, and so far she emerged victorious over that pain in life . Let's not add to her pains anymore by criticizing and feasting over her "major, major" answer. She well deserve a respect. No matter what her answer was, the fact is, she made it to the Top 5, and that is already a big accomplishment for Venus, which in turn made us proud. Maurag an mga Bicolana talaga, Rinconada pa!!! Hats off to Ms. Venus Raj! Two thumbs up! Congratulations Ms. Universe Runner-up!

Bukol

Dyan nga nakikita ang talino at galing ng isang contestant. kung gaano ka kabilis mag-isip at sumagot ng tama . kung di mo kaya.... talo ka.

2
Myra Aure

Bukol, that's your opinion. And you should also respect other's opinion. Di ba ikaw na rin nagsabi, this is a free country. Ang lakas mo pa magsalita na wag ako bastos because of my response to Ken Garcia's nasty comments about Ms. Raj's answer to Mr. Baldwin's question. pag-aralan mo kaya the way you deliver your comment, and ask yourself kung bastos ka o hindi. I avoid making a nasty or unfavorable comments against anyone, because I believe, according to an old adage, that "bago ka mamuna ng muta ng iba, tingnan mo muna muta sa mata mo". Yes, Philippines is a free country, a democratic one. But democracy is not to be abused, but should be conducted in a civil manner.

1
Myra Aure

Bukol, that's your opinion. But sino ba ang natalo? ikaw ba? Sino ba ang sumagot at tumayo sa stage nung panahon na yun? Ikaw ba? As you said earlier, ours is a free country, lahat ay may karapatang magcomment, so democracy is working in our country. But democracy should not be abused, rather, it should be conducted in a civil manner.  Ang lakas mo pa magsalita na wag ako bastos because of my response to Ken Garcia’s nasty comment against Ms. Raj’s answer to Mr. Baldwin’s question, during the recently held Ms. Universe pageant. Can you review how do you deliver your comments, and ask yourself if you’re rude or not. Sino kaya ang bastos sa atin? I avoid making a nasty comment against anyone, because I believe, according to the old adage that “ bago ka mamuna ng muta sa mata ng iba, tingnan mo muna muta sa sarili mong mata”. Be civil.

pigsa

Junie

Of course it cost her the crown, but what confuses me more is the negative comments that people here post just because she didn't win the crown - or answered better. Its a classic example of people looking at the glass as half-empty, instead of half full. I am glad she got to the top 5 spot. It's a shame she could not have answered better, but it's still an accomplishment to have reached that far. Weve never had one contestant get into the top 15 spot since 1999 and suddenly being top 5 is not good enough? So much crab mentality!

Great story Amy!

I have been thinking about it last night and it was a big mistake for answering a question that she don't understand. My expectations were high knowing that she is a college graduate. she should have hired an interpreter so she can express herself well. She blew it up and it was a major, major problem, I mean...
