'Mitch Fatel Retarded' More Google Trends Insanity? Maybe Not
Mitch Fatel retarded hit Google Trends with a vengeance which made me wonder what he had done to be trending in such a way. Mitch Fatel is not retarded, although David Letterman has described him as a "sweet pervert," he is a funny man who has been performing stand up comedy since the age of 15.
Mitch Fatel was a regular in the Jay Leno show, making four appearances as a stand-up comedy guest and doing more than a dozen correspondence pieces for the show. In fact some of America's most loved funny men love him. Along with Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and David Letterman are fans of his crude humor and tasteless jokes.
When you ask Mitch Fatel to describe his style of comedy though, the retarded trend starts to make sense. Mitch Fatel has made jokes about f*cking Betty Crocker, which of course sounds very retarded, but it isn't the reason he has started to trend as "Mitch Fatel retarded."
The reason for the combination of his name, Mitch Fatel, and the word retarded is simply explained... When asked to describe his style Mitch Fatel himself chose the word "retarded."
How long did it take you to find your style?
That’s a great question. I had done stand up when I was 15 years old. I bombed really bad and I never got back up on stage until I was 21, and the minute I went on stage the style that you’re talking about, which I call retarded, was there immediately. I did great. And I just hit the stage, and I knew my voice and everything. It worked so well that I didn’t do that again for two or three years.
You didn’t do what, the comedy?
The style. The character. I was so scared by how powerful I actually was, and it was too soon. I just didn’t expect to be doing so well so soon, and I got overwhelmed by it, quite honestly, and I pulled back.
Bruce Springsteen, who I think is the best lyricist in the world, has a song called “One Step Up,” and if you listen to the song he goes, “Somewhere along the line I slipped off track / One step up, two steps back.” And what I always took from that song was that we’re always on a course somewhere, but human nature always takes us off track. I think you need to constantly keep your eye on what you’re trying to do and recognize when you’re veering away from it.

Mitch Fatel, born Mitch Fertel, is a standup comedian that's been plying his trade for several years, and is beginning to have a real career at it. At one point, after he had graduated from college, worked as an intern on the Howard Stern Show, and before he left, recommended a friend of his, John Melendez, also known as Stuttering John, to replace him. He will debut a new comedy special on Comedy Central on September 18th, and released afterward on DVD titled Mitch Fatel is Magical. Sounds like Mitch Fatel is going places – maybe it would be worth a cash advance to catch his show on tour.
