A rumor spread across the Twitterverse that the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Pennsylvania was closing down, and that all the cuddly pets would be euthanized if you (yes, you) didn't race down and adopt them. Turns out it's not true.
I'm glad it's not true, since I'm not ready to own 147 dogs.
But wait... the Mongomery County Animal Shelter in Texas is closing down. So you're going to have to adopt those pets after all.
I called both Last Chance Ranch Animal Rescue in Quakertown and the Montgomery County SPCA in Conshohocken, and both confirmed that they will not be closing their doors.

Thanks, Truemorist! There are a lot of Montgomery Counties...I happen to live near the Penna. one, so I'm glad the pets are still being kept at the Animal Shelter.

Yeah, there ARE a lot of Montgomery Counties... I'm from Montgomery County, TX (originally), live near Montgomery County, MD now, there's Montgomery County, PA, and a friend of mine lives in Montgomery County, TN and thought it was referring to the animal shelter there.

This same rumor seems to be circulating regarding the shelter in Montgomery Township in NJ.

i'd be weary. google "montgomery township shelter closing" and some of the search results take you to a site with malware or even a adult site

Yes, be careful. Some sites take you to an online virus "protection" site. Dont click on anything or you will infect your computer. CLICK OUT OF THE SITES!

Montgomery County Texas is NOT closing down either. It's on the Montgomery County MD home page.
People should not believe everything they read on Craigslist

I am on the Board of the Humane Society of Montgomery County, Texas. We recently terminated our contract with the City of Conroe, Texas, to run its animal shelter because the City of Conroe refused to provide adequate funding to run the shelter. 9/20/09 was our last day there. The City of Conroe's shelter is not closing (I think it might be shut down briefly while they figure out what to do with it - we ran it for 30 years, so they have a lot to catch up on). There is another shelter in Montgomery County, Texas, called the Montgomery County Animal Shelter (which is the name used in this article), and it got dragged into this mess because people got the two shelters confused. The e-mails, Tweets, Facebook postings, Craigslist posting, etc., all got twisted into something else. Even new media (online newspapers like Woodlands Online), including our local ABC affiliate, published on their websited and reported on news broadcasts that we were "closing our doors" (NOT TRUE), and if all the animals in the shelter weren't adopted by 9/19, they would be euthanized (also NOT TRUE). This is a great example of how the internet can be a curse rather than a blessing.

The funny thing is.. this article is STILL wrong.. because there is a Montgomery County Animal Shelter (which did not close) it was actually the Humane Society of Montgomery County and they were actually lying because the city was taking over the shelter and they wanted to make them look bad (they were not going to euthanize everything as HSMC said). Soo wrong Montgomery County and wrong shelter, still. That's what happens when you get a bunch of idiots together and let them talk to the press.
