Mount Rushmore Singers"Picnic" xDDD (By Panoxa)

On this day in 1933, the famous Mount Rushmore was offically declared a National Park, which means it will always be kept in tip-top condition, and will always be a free tourist attraction.

See the history here

The famous mountain, featuring George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln attracts over 3 million visitors a year. It tells the story of the first 150years of United States presidential history, and is located near Keystone, South Dakota.

The monument covers 1,278 acres and is 5,725 feet above sea level.

I was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This is just one of many of my pictures of the sculpture. It's always a joy to spend a day in the hills. Sometimes we locals take it for granted.

I never thought that South Dakota would be as amazing as it was. I would recommend that every one visits it sometime in their life. I'm glad that I was able to get some great shots to remember my trip by!

Amazing statues, each tells its own story and presents its own imposing image.

Mount Rushmore is a great family experience. In addition to seeing "The Faces", there are other great experiences. We enjoyed Needles Highway, caves, nature hikes, wildlife, all of which afforded awesome photo opportunities!

Mount Rushmore Lincoln, taken on the short hiking path under the monument, on a very cloudy and foggy day in October, 2006.

Amy,

Thank you for asking to use my photo. I took this photo during a road trip from Nebraska to Seattle. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse are two monuments that everyone should see.

I was there in the summer of 2006 on my way to Big Sky. The high light of our trip was seeing Mount Rushmore. It is difficult to know how really big the presidents' heads are unless you see it in person.

I did visit Mount Rushmore many years ago and I thought it was an amazing sight, to see the work of the sculptor carved into the mountain like that. It seemed that it must have been a superhuman effort.

In recent years, I have learned that some of our First Americans, or Native Americans, feel that Mount Rushmore is a sacrilege against their sacred hills.

But, not so far away, a monument to a visionary leader among our First Americans is also being carved out of a mountain.

I did not take this particular photograph. It comes from either a government website of public domain images or another collection of public domain images.
