The Avengers 1998

Can a really bad movie ever become more entertaining with age? Of course, the answer is yes.

The Avenger, 1998 is one such movie that might well be the tipping point for Sean Connery. With a strong British cast, some of the performers would emerge as stars while some stars may wish they had simply drifted into a black hole.

I laughed until tears came at the absurdity. Now, however, there is a remake coming in 2012! OMG.

On a scale of 10, The Avengers 1998 version scored a 3.

Let’s dissect this piece of “film magic.”

First, I was curious about the writers.

Sydney Newman b 1917 in Toronto died in 1997 so this very well could have been the death of him.

“"Damn the upper classes -- they don't even own televisions!"

We required a new programme that would bridge the state of mind of sports fans, and the teenage pop music audience, while attracting and holding the children's audience accustomed to their Saturday afternoon serial. It had to be a children's programme and still attract both teenagers and adults. Also, as a children's programme, I was intent upon it containing basic factual information that could be described as educational, or, at least, mind opening for them. So my first thought was of a time-space machine with contemporary characters who would be able to travel forward and backward in time, and inward and outward in space. All the stories were to be based on scientific or historical facts as we knew them at the time. (On his inspiration for "Doctor Who" (1963))

I came to Britain at a crucial time in 1958 when the seeds of Look Back in Anger (1959) were beginning to flower. I am proud that I played some part in the recognition that the working man was a fit subject for drama, and not just a comic foil in middle-class manners.”

Ralph Fiennes had a little comedy relief. At this point in his career he had blockbusters on his resume: Schindler’s List and The English Patient, for instance. Time to let his hair down, and from that point on, time for his hair to fall out.

Uma Therman is a solid and credible actress who actually performed well in The Avengers, though pairing her up in occasional scenes with Great Grandpa Sean Connery was over the top. Pulp Fiction was her blockbuster.

Now, let’s get to the heart of The Avengers, Sean Connery. Was it his all white wardrobe or his all black Teddy Bear costume that brought the most disturbing laughter?
