MTV New Logo: No 'Music Television', More Room for Jersey Shore
MTV is getting a new logo, and the phrase "Music Television" no longer appears. This should come as no surprise, since MTV hasn't shown music videos in roughly a decade, veering into full-time reality television, a genre which it pioneered with The Real World. MTV's new logo leaves room in the M for stills from popular programs, by which I mean Jersey Shore.
In discussing the new logo, MTV's general manager Stephen Friedman made some noises about music, but the writing's on the wall: MTV is not about music anymore.
Mr. Friedman said MTV has also had a problem with brand recognition among viewers who would love certain shows but had no idea they aired on MTV. "The way the logo frames it makes it a simple reference point," he said
The new MTV logo isn't a complete departure from the original: The T and the V are opened up, and "Music Television" is gone. That's it.... and this redesign took them ten years.
If you're going to fuss over something for a decade, either go bigger or don't change it at all. Also, it's worth considering what you want the M to stand for now that the music is officially gone. I was angry when 120 Minutes got cut down to an hour, so you can imagine how I feel now.
Suddenly Friday Night Videos is relevant again, and can stage a triumphant comeback.

While I applaud more room for Jersey Shore, I think this is a bad move on their part - Much Music sucks now because they don't play music, just reruns of tv shows - it's sad to think MTV is going the exact same way.

After years of abuse from MTV, I feel no pain anymore. No shock, no disappointment...I am numb.

I guess, if MTV had played music in that decade, I would be surprised at them taking it out of the name. Seeing as how they didn't, I'm not surprised with the name change. It's sad that something that used to be pretty cool, now just sucks.
