After recently being diagnosed with Hepatitis C, singer Natalie Cole has been hospitalized due to side effects from medication to treat the disease.

Natalie Cole, who recently revealed she had hepatitis C, has been hospitalized as a result of side effects from her medication and a heavy promotional schedule, her representative said Friday.

The Grammy-winning singer has been in a New York City hospital since Sept. 12, and is expected to remain there for at least a few days, according to publicist Maureen O'Connor of the firm Rogers & Cowan.

Cole announced in July that she was suffering from hepatitis C, a liver disease spread through contact with infected blood. She said at the time that the disease was revealed during a routine examination and was likely caused by her drug use years ago.

She was absolutely lovely the night of the F1 Gala Dinner in KL Hilton in Malaysia, during the Malaysian F1 GP. Her hair-raising rendition of "Unforgettable" totally blew me away! She was smiling most of the time, pleasant and warmth throughout the evening.

I'm glad that the information of Natalie Cole contracting HepC has been made public.  This is a silent killer that is very much unknown.   Below is a portion of letter I sent to Congress.  There are many advocacy groups trying to bring awareness to this illness....most do not contract thru drug use.

There are over 4 million Americans impacted by Hepatitis C but the only dedicated federal funding stream provides a mere $17.6 million through CDC. This is insufficient to provide the most basic public health services such as education, counseling, testing, or medical management.

§ HCV is the most common, chronic, blood-borne viral infection in the United States.

§ Chronic liver disease is among the top ten killers of Americans 25 years of age and older. Hepatitis C is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the U.S. accounting for 40-60% of all cases.

§ HCV-related end-stage liver disease is a leading cause of death among people coinfected with HIV.

§ Without intervention, the Hepatitis C epidemic is expected to result in 3.1 million years of life lost by 2019. The projected direct and indirect costs of the current HCV epidemic, if left unchecked, will be over $85 billion for the years 2010 through 2019.
