Welcome Enya

March 23, 2009 is National Puppy Day in the United States.  The day, started by Colleen Paige, an animal behaviorist and the editor-in-chief of Pet Home Magazine, is part of an initiative to find familes for 10,000 homeless pups.

National Puppy Day 2009 is the first in what Colleen Paige hopes will become an annual event.  With an aim to end animal cruelty and find homes for abandoned puppies, National Puppy Day is likely to become a favorite with animal lovers across the globe.

In the fall National Puppy Day will become a social network for animal lovers when Paige launches a dog themed social media site.

Help us Save 10,000 homeless puppies across the nation on March 23rd! If you're a shelter or rescue organization, you can hold a fun event to help encourage local animal lovers to adopt. If you're just an animal lover, take the initiative to partner with a local animal shelter and host an adoption event in your town ....or if you're a business, become a sponsor of National Puppy Day by having your own event and reap the rewards of exposure to not only your local neighbors, but over 1.5 million visitors a month to the National Puppy Day site and enjoy the community credibility of participating in this worthy life saving holiday. Your event does need to be sanctioned by us! So please click here for more information.

The fuzzy puppies... so cute... but a massive responsibility. Even the smallest dog requires a pretty big lifestyle change. Also, they chew your computer cables, which may affect your ability to post user-generated content.

Let's see if we can find homes for puppies, kids and families.  Too many homeless and penniless these days.  I love puppies and dogs and cats, but since I presently have no income cannot afford myself, let alone an animal....I really want a horse too.

At the end of January, more than 600 abused and neglected dogs were rescued from three different kennels in Mt. Vernon, Wash. Of the 600 rescued dogs, 80 percent were pregnant and it is estimated that ultimately, 1,500 puppies will need homes.

Our hospital associates in the surrounding communities have helped with the rescue efforts to care for the Pets, which were found to be in dire need of food, water and medical attention. Steven Weinrauch, DVM, Banfield, helped organize a spay and neuter event for the rescued dogs on March 1 at our Renton, Wash. Banfield Pet hospital.

The doctors and hospital team at the Renton Banfield location donated their time to spay and neuter more than 40 dogs, as well as perform dental cleanings and tooth extractions. The Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT), Banfield’s charitable arm, and many of Banfield’s partners, such as PetSmart Charities, also donated to help cover the costs associated with the spays and neuters.

Today, most of the Pets are housed at the Everett Animal Shelter, which is now accepting applications to adopt the dogs. If you are interested, please contact them directly to find out how you can adopt a dog or help the shelter with their efforts.

Great initiative, but I wish it was not just for one day that we raised awareness of homeless puppies. Also, I am inclined to believe that the 10,000 stats is probably understated, and the real need for adoption is way higher.

This is Paris my mom and dad's papillion pup.

She has such a quirky personality! Her ears go right up when you say any of the following: Squirrelie, Goosie, Bunny, Daddy, Papa, Mommy, John-John, and Heather. Specifically if you say "Daddy's Home" she will run to the garage door barking like crazy. She loves sitting in the front door when the sun shines through and her favorite toy to play with is the Giraffe. She hates fireworks, the vacuum cleaner, and remote controlled toys.

This is an Australian cattle dog puppy on his best behavior. He and his owner were visiting the stand I was volunteering at at a pet expo. I volunteer for a group that fights against puppy mills.

This is a Shorkie. He was a great dog and he didn't shed at all. we had to sell him because he wasn't neutered and he was fighting with our other male. But he's now in a great home and his family loves him.

I wish I could help ALL the animals that have been displaced or tossed aside due to the economic crisis.  It is sad at the best of times to think of all the abandoned animals!
