NBC Isn't Done With Conan O' Brien
The second Late Night War just got stranger. According to industry news source, Variety, NBC has greenlit the pilot for a one-hour drama from Conan O' Brien.
With the working title of Justice, the pilot centers on a Supreme Court Justice who steps down to run a legal practice. O' Brien is executive producing through his company, Conaco, whose contract with Universal Media Studios doesn't expire for another year and a half.
If picked up, it wouldn't be O' Brien's first primetime show. In 2007 he was the creator and executive producer of the short-lived sitcom, Andy Parker, P.I. which also aired on NBC. He also wouldn't be the first former talk show host for NBC to have a show airing on the network. David Letterman, who feuded with Jay Leno during the first Late Night War, was the executive producer on Ed which ran from 2000-04.
O' Brien started his career as a writer on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. He created and executive produced a pilot with friend and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog creator and voice, Robert Smigel, in 1991. It was titled, Lookwell, and starred Adam West as a former TV show star who takes his honoary police badge too seriously. The pilot was never picked up.
After his 7-month stint as host of the Tonight show, O' Brien is laying low while he decides what to do next. FOX has made no official offer, but its cable channel, FX, has but no word on whether he is seriously considering a move to cable.
