91 Years Birthday Tribute to Nelson Mandela

July 18, 2009 marks the 91st birthday of anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela, and although he survived 27 years in prison the heroic former South African President finds aging to be a difficult battle.  Still an active social justice advocate, Nelson Mandela has found aging to be one of the biggest hurdles of his life.

In recent years Mandela has been too weak to make public appearances and has had to opt out of events that he strongly supports.  This has been frustrating for a man who inspired a nation to change and went on from political prisoner to become the first fully participatory democratically elected President of South Africa.

In an interview with CNN Nelson Mandela's wife Machel said that the former President was celebrating his birthday quietly with friends and loved ones in Johannesburg.  His 91st birthday will be a low key event even though worldwide it will be marked by public events.  The public honorings of Nelson Mandela's July 18 birthday will be fundraising efforts for those charities he most loves, a fitting way for a man who literally gave his freedom for his country to continue his legacy.

Graca Machel told CNN in an exclusive interview that the Nobel peace prize winner was finding it difficult to come to terms with the limitations of age but he is fighting to carry on working with his charities.

Mandela spent 27 years in jail before his release and was elected as South Africa's first black president in 1994. The veteran anti-apartheid campaigner is using his birthday to promote a message of helping others.

Machel said Mandela is too frail to travel overseas to the New York launch of the new charity initiative Mandela Day.

Mandela, who she calls Madiba, was spending the day at home in Johannesburg with his family.

His wife said he still keeps busy working with his charities he has slowed down, something he finds frustrating.

"Madiba is a very proud person. He is vain so when he realizes that he can't walk tall and firm like he used to be, he doesn't like it."

He is an Icon and modern Gandhi of sorts.

Last I checked Gandhi was an advocate of NON-violence.  Mandella on the other hand achieved his goals through the use of extreme torture and murder.  They are not morally equivalent in any way whatsoever.

Wow, 91 years old, he's had such an amazing, yet tragic, and inspiring life - I hope he celebrates many birthdays to come.

South Africa hails "Mandela Day."

Mandela Day organizers encourage people to devote at least one minute to community service for each of the 67 years Mandela campaigned against apartheid.

Nelson Mandela is a living symbol for all those who have unjustly suffered oppression in the past and the present.

Thanks for this, Tina! Mr. Mandela is quite remarkable. A favorite poem of mine begins: "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure."  Readers may click here to read the poem by Mr. Mandela in its entirety. Thanks again!

It's remarkable that he reaches 91 years old and still remains an advocate for social justice.
